Comfort & Protection

Another major part of the research Dr. McQueen is pursuing involves investigating the performance of textiles, typically those intended for direct contact next to the skin (i.e., underwear and sportswear) and the influence on wearer comfort. This research direction is not entirely separate from her main interest, as there are clear links between odour absorption and moisture regain, as well as a relationship between a textile’s moisture level and bacterial colonization. Unlike research in odour, this is a much more widely covered area within textile research. The specific projects Dr. McQueen has worked on in this area (expanded on in Section 3.4) has often been first raised by the queries and needs of industry as well as by users. Working with industrial partners, for the protection of worker communities who have specific problems to address with regard to their clothing satisfaction, is a very important and rewarding role that she performs as an academic researcher.
